2004 Toyota Prius

2004 Toyota Prius

Client has been having issues with the brake lights, tail latch,
headlights, and some of the warning dash lights stay on.
On occasion trouble starting or turning off vehicle.
In which instance the dash lights will not turn on.
 Minor body work/part replacement.

History: Client's vehicle has been hit several times, rear ended.

I will service the vehicle tomorrow.
Today I want to research possible culprits to the issues my client is having.

Lights not working/intermintent:
Clear Service Codes, Bulbs, Fuses, Battery, Wires, Unit
 Tools Needed:
OBD II adapter and software, voltage tester.

Client has replaced brake lights. Still does not work.

Run OBD II scan and document service codes.
Look up service codes.
Clear codes as needed.

 Check Fuses

2004 and 2005 Priuses may lose internal power-inverter coolant, resulting in the Check Engine light going on. The inverter has been modified to fix the problem, and the dealer can take care of the upgrade if you have the problem. (This was fixed as a running change in the 2005 model year, so not all 2005s will have it.)  This is in effect during the full 96 month/100,000 mile warranty period.

Toyota Prius cars built from August 2003 through February 2005 may have a software glitch resulting in the gas engine stalling, leaving just the electric engine running, which is not enough to maintain highway speeds. Despite 68 reported incidents, there have been no injuries or deaths; this problem is fairly rare. A recall has been initiated as of October 2005.

Maintenance Required - it informs you that the oil and filters need to be changed as part of the regular maintenance program. A message on the multi information display (if you have one) might warn you several hundreds of miles/km to schedule the maintenance before the MAINT REQD light pops up.

Brake light warning - YELLOW WARNING LIGHT When the regenerative brake system fails...

Anti-lock Braking System warning light- tells that the anti-lock braking system (which prevents the wheels from locking under hard braking so you can keep control of the vehicle) has encountered a problem or a sensor needs replacement. The icon may also come up if one of the sensors has caught too much dirt or if you did a burnout with you car and stopped quick enough to fool the ABS system. This also applies for when your car is stuck in snow or mud and the tires spin freely.
